WHY REcycle Glass?
Recycling glass is the easiest and most effective form of recycling the average person or family can do. For every six pounds of glass you recycle, you are preventing one pound of carbon dioxide from polluting the air. And for each pound of glass you recycle, you save more than one pound of natural resources from having to be sourced from the earth! Glass is one of the longest-lasting man-made materials. In the protected environment of a landfill, a glass bottle is estimated to take a million years to decompose.
Unlike other recyclables such as plastic and cardboard, glass is 100% recyclable and creates no additional waste or by-products - a closed-looped system. So when you put a glass jar in the recycling bin, all of that glass jar gets used to create another glass product and no new waste is created. It can also be recycled endlessly without loss of quality or purity so glass can be recycled again and again and again forever. By substituting even just 50% of the raw materials for creating new glass with recycled glass, the waste produced from mining and transporting raw materials is cut by more than 80%, or 308 pounds for each ton of glass made. According to the University of Southern Indiana, for each glass bottle you recycle you save enough energy to run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours or a compact fluorescent bulb for 20 hours.
When you recycle your glass you don't have to guess or wonder if it's creating an impact. You know you are reducing emissions, saving energy, and protecting the earth's raw materials and natural habitats - all to help create a better future both today and for the next generation.
And on top of all that, for every 1,000 tons of glass recycled, 8 jobs are created! We know ours were! Here's to a better and more sustainable future.
